Federal agents' visit was a hoax
Student admits he lied about Mao book
By AARON NICODEMUS, Standard-Times staff writer

NEW BEDFORD -- The UMass Dartmouth student who claimed to have been visited by Homeland Security agents over his request for "The Little Red Book" by Mao Zedong has admitted to making up the entire story.
The 22-year-old student tearfully admitted he made the story up to his history professor, Dr. Brian Glyn Williams, and his parents, after being confronted with the inconsistencies in his account.
Had the student stuck to his original story, it might never have been proved false.
But on Thursday, when the student told his tale in the office of UMass Dartmouth professor Dr. Robert Pontbriand to Dr. Williams, Dr. Pontbriand, university spokesman John Hoey and The Standard-Times, the student added new details.
The agents had returned, the student said, just last night. The two agents, the student, his parents and the student's uncle all signed confidentiality agreements, he claimed, to put an end to the matter.
But when Dr. Williams went to the student's home yesterday and relayed that part of the story to his parents, it was the first time they had heard it. The story began to unravel, and the student, faced with the truth, broke down and cried.
It was a dramatic turnaround from the day before.
For more than an hour on Thursday, he spoke of two visits from Homeland Security over his inter-library loan request for the 1965, Peking Press version of "Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung," which is the book's official title.
His basic tale remained the same: The book was on a government watch list, and his loan request had triggered a visit from an agent who was seeking to "tame" reading of particular books. He said he saw a long list of such books.
In the days after its initial reporting on Dec. 17 in The Standard-Times, the story had become an international phenomenon on the Internet. Media outlets from around the world were requesting interviews with the students, and a number of reporters had been asking UMass Dartmouth students and professors for information.
The story's release came at a perfect storm in the news cycle. Only a day before, The New York Times had reported that President Bush had allowed the National Security Agency to conduct wiretaps on international phone calls from the United States without a warrant. The Patriot Act, created in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to allow the government greater authority to monitor for possible terrorism activities, was up for re-authorization in Congress.
There was an increased sense among some Americans that the U.S. government was overstepping its bounds and trampling on civil liberties in order to thwart future attacks of terrorism. The story of a college student being questioned for requesting a 40-year old book on Communism fed right into that atmosphere.
In Thursday's retelling of the story, the student added several new twists, ones that the professors and journalist had not heard before. The biggest new piece of information was an alleged second visit of Homeland Security agents the previous night, where two agents waited in his living room for two hours with his parents and brother while he drove back from a retreat in western Massachusetts. He said he, the agents, his parents and his uncle all signed confidentiality agreements that the story would never be told.

He revealed the agents' names: one was Nicolai Brushaev or Broshaev, and the other was simply Agent Roberts. He said they were dressed in black suits with thin black ties, "just like the guys in Men in Black."
He had dates and times and places, things he had signed and sent back in order to receive the book. The tale involved his twin brother, who allegedly requested the book for him at UMass Amherst; his uncle, a former FBI attorney who took care of all the paperwork; and his parents, who signed those confidentiality agreements.
But by now, the story had too many holes. Every time there was a fact to be had that would verify the story -- providing a copy of the confidentiality agreements the student and agent signed, for example -- there would be a convenient excuse. The uncle took all the documents home to Puerto Rico, he said.
What was the address of the Homeland Security building in Boston where he and his uncle visited the agency and actually received a copy of the book? It was a brick building, he said, but he couldn't remember where it was, or what was around it.
He said he met a former professor at the mysterious Homeland Security building who had requested a book on bomb-making, along with two Ph.D. students and a one pursuing a master's degree who had also been stopped from accessing books. The student couldn't remember their names, but the former professor had appeared on the Bill O'Reilly show on Fox News recently, he said.
The former professor's appearance on The O'Reilly Factor did not check out.
Other proof was sought.

Were there any copies of the inter-library loan request? No.
Did the agents leave their cards, or any paperwork at your home? No.
His brother, a student at Amherst, told Dr. Williams that he had never made the inter-library loan request on behalf of his brother.
While The Standard-Times had tape recorded the entire tale on Thursday, the reporter could not reach the student for comment after he admitted making up the story. Phone calls and a note on the door were not returned.
At the request of the two professors and the university, The Standard-Times has agreed to withhold his name.

During the whole episode, the professors said that while they wanted to protect the student from the media that were flooding their voice mails and e-mail boxes seeking comment and information, they also wanted to know: Was the story true?
"I grew skeptical of this story, as did Bob, considering the ramifications," Dr. Williams said yesterday. "I spent the last five days avoiding work, and the international media, and rest, trying to get names and dates and facts. My investigation eventually took me to his house, where I began to investigate family matters. I eventually found out the whole thing had been invented, and I'm happy to report that it's safe to borrow books." Dr. Williams said he does not regret bringing the story to light, but that now the issue can be put to rest.

"I wasn't involved in some partisan struggle to embarrass the Bush administration, I just wanted the truth," he said.

Dr. Pontbriand said the entire episode has been "an incredible experience and exposure for something a student had said." He said all along, his only desire had been to "get to the bottom of it and get the truth of the matter."
"When it blew up into an international story, our only desire was to interview this student and get to the truth. We did not want from the outset to declare the student a liar, but we wanted to check out his story," he said. "It was a disastrous thing for him to do. He needs attention, he needs care. I feel for the kid. We have great concern for this student's health and welfare."

Mr. Hoey, the university spokesman, said the university had been unable to substantiate any of the facts of the story since it first was reported in The Standard-Times on Dec. 17.

As to any possible repercussions against the student, Mr. Hoey said, "We consider this to be an issue to be handled faculty member to student. We wouldn't discuss publicly any other action. Student discipline is a private matter."
Dr. Williams said the whole affair has had one bright point: The question of whether it is safe for students to do research has been answered.

"I can now tell my students that it is safe to do research without being monitored," he said. "With that hanging in the air like before, I couldn't say that to them."
The student's motivation remains a mystery, but in the interview on Thursday, he provided a glimpse.

"When I came back, like wow, there's this circus coming on. I saw my cell phone, and I see like, wow, I have something like 75 messages and like something like 87 missed calls," he said. "Wow, I was popular. I usually get one or probably two a week and that's about it, and I usually pick them up."

Smurfette is left for dead. Baby Smurf is left crying and orphaned as the Smurf's village is carpet bombed by warplanes _ a horrific scene and imagery not normally associated with the lovable blue-skinned cartoon characters.

These are the scenes being shown as part of a new UNICEF ad-campaign on Belgian television.

"It's working. We are getting a lot of reactions and people are logging on to our Web site," UNICEF Belgium spokesman Philippe Henon said Tuesday.

The Belgian office of the U.N. children's fund said it has decided to use the creations of late Belgian artist Peyo to shock a complacent public into backing its fund-raising efforts for ex-child soldiers in Africa.

The 20-second video commercial clip now being shown on Belgian TV aims to show that war can happen in the most innocent of places, Henon said.

"We get reactions from all over the place," said Henon. "People are shocked and want to know the reasons behind this cartoon image."

The appeal is meant to raise money for UNICEF projects in Burundi, Congo and Sudan, Henon said. However, due to its graphic and disturbing scenes, this cartoon is not for everyone. The advertisement is aimed at an adult audience and is only shown after 9 p.m. to avoid upsetting young Smurfs fans.

The video is peacefully introduced by birds, butterflies and happy Smurfs playing and singing their theme song when suddenly out of the sky, bombs rain down onto their forest village, scattering Papa Smurf and the rest as their houses are set ablaze.

The bombs kill Smurfette leaving Baby Smurf orphaned and crying at the edge of a crater in the last scene of the video and finishing of with the text "don't let war destroy the children's world."

It calls on viewers to donate.

UNICEF traditionally uses real life images of playing and laughing children but decided to change it for something that would shock people, Henon said.

"We wanted to have lasting effect of our campaign, because we felt that in comparison to previous campaigns, the public is not easily motivated to do things for humanitarian causes and certainly not when it involved Africa or children in war," he said.

Henon added that UNICEF would never cross the line and film real-life war scenes in its appeals.

The UNICEF campaign was launched Friday with the Smurf TV spot and will last until April.

"We see so many images that we don't really react anymore," said Julie Lamoureux, account director at Publicis, an advertising agency that drew up the campaign for UNICEF Belgium. "In 35 seconds we wanted to show adults how awful war is by reaching them within their memories of childhood."

The Smurf ad will be followed by similar ad in November to promote UNICEF's "let children live in peace" campaign.

French children's program Martine and the children's song "Au Clair de la Lune" will be presented with changed lyrics.

I picked this game last weekend for my Playstation 2. This game is quite possibly the best flying action game for the consoles right now. The game is a WWII PTO air combat game that has missions starting at Pearl Harbor up to the landings on IWO JIMA.

There are about 35 upgradeable aircraft, that cne be upgraded to more improved models. The physics of this game are modeled to be very realistic for a console shooter, STALLS will Kill you as you will lose control and crash. As each aircraft from Fighters to bombers all handle with their own personality. The Upgraded Bearcat is the fastest and most powerful of the USN craft, with four 20mm Hispano cannons a it is a vicious dogfighter. But the twitchy manuverability makes this a craft hard to handle. But with practice the craft is flying death to any experienced pilot.

Challenge and learning curve of this game is high as first timers will find the ROOKIE setting challenging enough as they learn the controls and gain situtational awarness of each mission.

My next game purchases are Battlefield: Modern Combat, Call of Duty 2, Big Red One and Brothers in Arms Earned in Blood. BMC is probably going to be my first choice since IGN's latest review has me sold and the fact My collection is already blowing out the wazoo with WWII games.

Now is someone can make a Korean Conflict Flight Combat game I will be happy. I want to fly a F86 over Mig Alley in my Playstation.

Berkeley's Veterans Day ceremony, scheduled for Nov. 11, was abruptly canceled on Monday because the volunteer organizing committee split over the political content.
At issue was a proposal by the chairman, singer/songwriter Country Joe McDonald, to have Bill Mitchell, a co-founder of Cindy Sheehan's organization, Gold Star Families for Peace, as the keynote speaker.

Mitchell's and Sheehan's sons were killed in Iraq the same day.

Some committee members worried that Mitchell would inject an unwelcome note of partisanship into the event, which has been scrupulously non-political in years past.

"If you want to have an anti-war rally, count me in," said Linda Perry, an aide to City Councilman Laurie Capitelli. "But not on Veteran's Day. It's neither the time nor the place."

Edwin Harper, adjutant of the local Disabled American Veterans chapter, which has participated in past Berkeley Veterans Day observances, threatened that his group would pull out.

"They have the other 364 days and 23 hours to make their political point," he said. "This one hour should be reserved for honoring veterans, period."

McDonald, backed by other members of the committee, disagreed, saying that not permitting Mitchell to express his point of view would be tantamount to censoring free speech.

"Their position was that no matter what he said, because he was a member of Gold Star Families, he wouldn't be allowed to speak," McDonald said. "I've been doing this for 10 years, and this is the first time content and affiliation ever came up for discussion. I was shocked to find this kind of narrow-mindedness in my own hometown, in Berkeley, the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement."

I go to Eastern Michigan University, Now this place is liberal like any college campus but not as BAD as Berekley YALE or Harvard or MIT, EMU pumps out teachers for crying out loud. Which brings me to this conclusion. The more you pay for college the more of this trash you will deal with. I have never seen any ROTC or Military recuiters in EMU get spit on or called names like the do at UC berekely. UC is one of the best engineering programs in the USA, but unfortunately its reputation for being a haven for leftist drivel has overshadowed this fact.

At my school I have known 5 girls I work with who have taken Women's Studies as recomended by the advisor. 4 of them have told me this "I F***ing HATE THIS CLASS"
My school cannot effectively push feminism on its students anymore.
It Must be the funding, since EASTERN cannot prop up feminism after spending 7 mil on a house for the University President.

Another more valid reason why is EMU different, because the students here all have to WORK their way through School, this leaves no time for socialist agitation or protesting. While the elitist trust fund babies have all the time in the world.
What time we do have is set aside for more important activities such as parties, booze filled romps and video game binges. Majority of EMU's studen body is comporised of students who want to get an education so we will not become miserable washed up High School jock factory trash.

So parents do not worry about you kids getting into an Ivy League school, they are vastly overrated.

Ms. Jones must be a sucker for those infomercials if you can get her to buy AIR. I can't believe it; that's just about the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

If feel bad for Zeta-Jones (ok, well, not really), though, because she seems a little homesick for Mother England. She mentions on occasion that she'd like for her children to grow up knowing that Wales is their home. She claims that she loves L.A., but it's shallow. Ya, that's right, she says L.A.'s shallow of all things. Gee, you don't think buying an empty bottle filled with "Welsh air" is shallow do you Ms. Jones?

Perhaps that is a perfect reason for her to purchase air, though, as it seems one textbook definition of being shallow is to be "marked by insufficient inhalation of air". Maybe she has honest intentions with the bottles: to inflate her little head with something of substance. That's almost as bad as purchasing a star for your loved one or friend. Ms. Jones, if you're willing to buy that product, then I have some ventilated condoms to sell you.

Ang Lee's latest film "Brokeback Mountain" won the Golden Lion for best film, capping the 62nd Venice Film Festival, the world's oldest. The feature, starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, is the story of two cowboys who meet and eventually fall in love in 1960s Wyoming and are forced to try and maintain a veil of "normalcy" by marrying women and having children. The film won the top Venice award on the same night that it had its gala premiere here at the Toronto International Film Festival. French director Philippe Garrel won the Silver Lion for best director for his feature "Les Amantsréguliers," a story centering on a group of students during the tumultuous summer of 1968 in Paris.
Abel Ferrara received a special jury prize for "Mary," a critical look at the role of Christianity in the media. Also taking a prize for the film was William Lubtchansky, who received the fest's "Osella for an Outstanding Technical Contribution" award for his work in creating the film's photography.

In other prizes, David Strathairn won the festival's CoppaVolpi for best actor for "Good Night, and Good Luck" by George Clooney, whichwill open the New York Film Festival later this month. History has been made... This is the first Post of my first ever Blog. The title it comes from a Screenplay I have been writing, it is a science fiction War story about a United States Air Force Special Forces Fighter squadron during a Interstellar War in 2114.

Notice how I said "UNITED STATES" There is no new world order unified global hippy fairy can only exist in fantasy global government in this story. In this future, We still have divided nations, hunger, poverty strife, shitty tv shows, racism, stupidity, assholes and the Detroit Lions still suck.

See that pic above that is one of the fighters used in this tale of mine. I drew it all by myself on paper by using photos of the JSF and F22 as models, scanned it then colored with with microsoft paint.

On the subject..I decided in this tale I am writing, the future will still have the same problems as of today. Why? Do you really think we can eliminate all the social ills in this world?
